Dear Yuletide Author

Let me start with an apology - I'm sorry I haven't finished and posted this letter sooner. (I have a million reasons of course - my son was sick all week, I just got it last night, blah blah, but really - that's irrelevant.

So yes, point one - sorry about my tardiness!

Point two: I am a total newbie at Yuletide, and I'm so excited! I'm sure I will enjoy whatever you write. Since these fandoms are small, there's not enough fanfic, so anything added will kick ass. Generally, I'm easy to please. In summary, don't stress (if you can help it. I'm a total stress-freak, so I understand that, too), you're going to rock.

Point three: Thank you for taking time out of your schedule during this busy time of year to write something for me and the community. That's such an awesome thing to do.

Point four: Feel free to write whatever your heart desires. But if you'd like any extra suggestions, here's a bit about what presses my good buttons, and what makes me squick.

Good Things (tm) - character driven stories that revolve around relationships more than pure action (I love to get in their heads), h/c (I'm more on the comfort side of the scale and my particular kink here is cold!fic), relationships that start with UST, and gradually resolve it. Poetic writing.

Squicks: vomit, scat, mpreg, non-con

Fandom Request #1: Charles de Lint's Newford Series (Cody, Joe Crazy Dog, Whiskey Jack)
Blurb from Request: What happens when someone tries to trick a trickster? Is there honor among thieves?
More babbling: I'm pretty open here (as usual). Including any/all of these characters would be great. I love that Cody is always trying to change things for the better, even as he often makes things worse. Joe Crazy Dog interests me as he is a half corbae, half canid - and his edge of 'insanity' makes for fun. Whiskey Jack compels me as trickster (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisakedjak for more info.) Really, anything with magic and mayhem would be fabulous. Can be slash or gen, or even het though that would be my last preference.

Fandom Request #2: Tombstone (Doc Holliday/Wyatt Earp)
Blurb from Request: I'd prefer slash. Angsty h/c if possible.
More babbling: Vague request is vague. Hopefully this means you feel free to follow your heart, and not like you'd like to rip mine out. I'd love to see a slashy take on their relationship, especially since Doc is so unswervingly loyal to Wyatt. Gen would be fine, not really into het here but I'm really fine if that's where the muse takes you. In terms of the h/c, I'd prefer Doc to be the h and Wyatt to be the c, of course. Prefer no death!fic, but again - if that's where it's going, I'll be happy to go with you.

Fandom Request #3: Chronicles of Riddick series (Jack aka Kyra/ Richard B Riddick)
Blurb from Request: Angsty, h/c (with Riddick as the H, and Kyra/Jack as the C, if possible)
More babbling: I am a fan of turning roles on their heads. Riddick isn't exactly one who would be comfortable in the hurt/care-taken role, and Kyra doesn't seem much of a caretaker - but I'll bet it could happen. Show me how? This is one fandom where I prefer het. And I'd prefer Kyra to be an adult if there is some fun sexytimes.

Fandom Request the Last: The Prophecy (movie) (Gabriel)
Blurb from Request: Angsty. H/C with Gabriel as the H, if possible
More babbling : It can't be easy going from angel to human, especially for someone who feels about humans as Gabriel does. I'm imagining Gabriel in a place of vulnerability (sick or hurt for the first time) and he's found by some kind soul who takes care of him. Could this be a part of what changes his mind about the monkeys? I don't mind OCs here, or het, slash or gen. Free reign!

I hope this has given you enough suggestions to intrigue, but not so many that you feel stifled. Really, I will love whatever you write!

Thank you thank you,
Kat (also, if you wanted to stalk my nonfic LJ it's at [info]aubreym , but really that's just about my boring RL.)

Three dark heads bend over the map.

“Here.”  Elrohir's finger stabs down hard enough to wrinkle.

Legolas steadies him with a hand on his shoulder.  Elrohir shrugs him away.

“There are too many,” Elrond rubs his eyes.  “We know not who sent them.”  Meaning 'I cannot lose  more.'

Elladan cocks a brow.  “We know enough.”

“We must not rush in with swords drawn.”

“We would all be fools to pray for justice!  I will not sit on my hands and do nothing.”

“You are no longer children,” Elrond sighs.

“So we ride.” Legolas' voice holds danger and promise.

Elrohir smiles.

Though he would never admit it, Elrohir doubted the Quest would succeed.  If it failed, Legolas would fall as well, this he did not doubt.  Thus, when Halbarad and his Rangers rode to join Aragorn's company, Elrohir rode at their side.  He stood beside Legolas on the Paths of the Dead, on Pelennor Fields, as he faced the hordes in Mordor.  In the midst of blood and darkness and death, in the presence of evil, there was but one spot of brightness.  Even in the deepest dark, he saw Legolas eyes - glorious  eyes that smile and burn with vengeance, with promise.

He leans against the jamb, wood splintering rough under his hand.  Lack of sleep grits against his eyelids but he refuses to rub them.  Refuses to submit to his aching body.  He gazes out over the city – still in this moment just after dawn.  The breeze is scented with jasmine and rose.  The sky blue as a robin's egg and just as fragile.  At any moment it could crack open, darkness bursting through to stain all.  Legolas feels it building over the mountains.  Behind him Elrohir slumbers still, curled beneath their blankets.  Legolas is alone in the pale blue morning.

He has given his face, his voice.  He would give more, give all, if it would alter the way of things.  He closes his eyes, but painted against the darkness is Elrohir's hand raised, defending the Bard.  He tries not to hear, but in every song Lindir is voicing the words he cannot say now, or ever.  And Elrohir listens, his gaze turned to another, his smile for another.  Because Legolas walked away – because he did not trust himself.  So he has lost and so he regrets.  Actions not taken.  Words not spoken.  Love turned to another and so, lost.

I hesitate in the entrance.  Waiting. No longer certain of my welcome; no longer certain of anything. He looks up. His quill falls to the floor. He sits, still as his father's marble statues and as pale.

“Elrohir.” My voice, little more than a whisper, grates.

Silence between us, a chasm. Logs shift, flames crack. Smell of wood-smoke, ink, and parchment. Like him. Unable to bear his utter stillness, I kneel before him, take his cold hand. “Please.”

Cracks fissure through my heart. I have lost him.

Then, beyond hope, his hand on my head. “Legolas.” Forgiving. In spite of everything.

Colors swirl along the edge of his vision, sparking bright and sharp. He gulps a breath and struggles to smile. To relax. To keep it together. Fortunately, with the bass throbbing, strobes flashing, the heat, the dancing – no one seems to notice him hovering against the wall. He slides to the floor, cradling his head in his hands. Too much. It’s all too much. He can’t… can’t… Tears slide down his cheeks leaving cool trails and he shudders. Then, a hand on his shoulder, gentle.

“Come on, Ant.” Michael, calling him back, picking him up piece by piece by piece.

“What is this?”  Elrohir raised a brow at the feast spread before him.

Legolas smiled.  “'Tis Thanksgiving, is it not?”

Elrohir nodded, though he still seemed puzzled.  “I thought it was not a Mirkwood custom.”

“You are a long way from home on a celebration day.  And I have many thanks I wish to give.”  He drew Elrohir down before a crackling fire, then handed him a goblet of mulled wine.  “Though this year has been dark for me and mine, still has light been given.  'Ro, you are that light and I give thanks for you.”  Sweet wine flowed.

“There's just this for consolation: an hour here or there when our lives seem, against all odds and expectations, to burst open and give us everything we've ever imagined....” The Hours

One might think that to elves, unlike Men, years pass as moments.  Betimes 'tis true – but not always.  Though millennia have passed since Elrohir's eyes met mine across the courtyard, I remember every hour with perfect clarity.  Especially one.  Autum in Imladris; trees cloaked red and gold.  The air held the promise of snow.  He stood alone, gazing through the library window.  I came upon him there.  He shivered in the empty cold, but did not turn to me.  Until I reached out, placed one hand upon his shoulder.  Heat flowed between us and I knew – we were not alone.

Beth rubbed her eyes and yawned. She refreshed her email for the third time in as many minutes, but it refused to yield a new message. She yawned again, jaw cracking and ears popping. She squinted at the numbers on the upper right of her monitor and they came clear. 2 am, which meant it was 10 am in London. Late enough for him to be awake, but early enough that he wouldn't be out yet – they had agreed it would be the best time to chat, either by IM or email. He must have forgotten, again. She jabbed the monitor power with one finger. “Dammit, Eddie,” she grumbled. “Selfish man.”

Though the twins looked identical, Legolas had not spent more than a short time with them before he understood their differences.  Elladan, elder by mere moments, was the more demonstrative.  Quick to anger, but quicker to laugh.  He preferred action to discussion.  He spent long hours on the practice grounds and equally long making mischief.  Elrohir was the younger and more reserved.  He considered movements before making them.  He studied history and healing.  When he joined Elladan in mischief, his silver tongue spared them punishment.  He held his heart close.  Of the two, it was Elrohir who captured Legolas' attention.

Hair black as pitch, pulled back and twisted in intricate braids which hung past broad shoulders.  Bright argent eyes sparkling with wit and wisdom – farther back, deeper in, longing and compassion.  Full lips quirked in identical smiles, holding just the barest edge of mischief.  Bodies sturdier than most elves; torsos well defined from countless hours spent in battle.  Arms lithe but strong as the steel they wielded.  Long legs slightly spread and planted firmly.  Neither were easy to unbalance.  Graceful, powerful, fell warriors and staunch allies.  Mirror images.  Even so, Legolas never mistook one of Elrond's sons for the other.

Title: Ends

Notes:  Written for [info]fanfic100 challenge: 003. Ends

Lord Elrond claims that endings are no more than a circle completed.  That to have beginnings means endings will follow.  Night follows day, death life.  It is the order of things.  I heard his teaching; I believed his words.  But they never fully penetrated.  Or perhaps, were I truthful, I hoped that Elrond was mistaken for once.  He was not.  Autumn is a season of endings – days grow short and cold, trees lose their leaves...  Both twins grow quiet, distant.  I see them drifting from me and I am powerless.  Darkness grows on the horizon, looming large as this ending.

Most of the time, being in the middle suited Legolas just perfectly.   He would blink awake at dawn, warmth surrounding him – nestled cozily between Elrohir and Elladan, dark hair and blond mingling on the pillows.  Many nights passed in mutual sharing of burdens and joys and the taking and giving of pleasure.  Legolas thought they had found equilibrium.  Until the balance began to shift and the middle was no longer a place of comfort.  In lieu of joy there was anger, in lieu of pleasure came recrimination.  No longer a haven, bed became an extension of battlefields.  Three were sundered.

Most people prefer beginnings – but I often find them discomfiting.  It takes me time to find my footing.  My place.  Except once; when I met Elrohir.  We faced each other in the courtyard as Lord Elrond made introductions and all else faded.  Even in the midst of my grief I recognized him.  It was as though we were not meeting for the first time, but taking up the threads of an old friendship.  I could only see his eyes, silver gaze mirroring my loss, but lit deep within by compassion.  In that moment I understood; somehow I had come home.
